Where LNG projects meet the field

An LNG project is a sequencing problem before it is anything else. Modules arrive on a fixed marine schedule and must be set, aligned, and connected in an order decided long before the first crew mobilized. Stick-built scope fills the space between them, and the interfaces between the two are where hours are lost: connections that assume both sides are complete, hydrotest boundaries that cross a module line, cable pulls that wait on structural completion.

Tank construction and marine works run on their own logic and rarely share float with the process area. Pipe racks compete with heavy-lift windows for the same crane time and the same laydown. Weather closes those windows on a calendar the plan treats as an average. Meanwhile the craft peak lands on a remote site: camps, buses, travelers, and rotations all become schedule inputs, and the share of each trade that must be imported decides whether the histogram is a forecast or a wish.

The field also carries the completion scope that modularization was supposed to remove. Pipe, instrumentation, and electrical termination volumes stay high, and they land in the same months as commissioning mobilization. That overlap is the single most common source of late-project surprise on LNG work.

Readiness questions before mobilization

Before the main workforce arrives, the questions are plain. Does the craft histogram match what the region and the rotation model can actually supply, trade by trade, with proven hands rather than headcount? Is supervision in place at the ratio the plan assumes, and has it worked on this scope before? Are work packages complete to the work front, with materials, drawings, access, scaffold, and permits, or is the field expected to sort that out in the morning?

Then the site itself: laydown sized and sequenced, temporary facilities and power ready, camp and transport capacity matched to peak, heavy-lift and marine windows agreed and protected, and module delivery dates confirmed against yard progress rather than yard promises. When an LNG project is behind

Late LNG projects usually present as a progress dispute. Reported percentage complete no longer matches the field, rules of credit have drifted, and the recovery plan restates the same productivity that has not been achieved for two quarters. Before anyone commits to a new date, the useful first step is a plain statement of condition: what is installed, what is packaged and ready, what is waiting on materials or access, and what the achieved productivity has actually been.

Commissioning and first-gas readiness

First gas is decided by systems, not by areas. Readiness means the project has been systemized, turnover packages are being built as work completes rather than after it, the commissioning organization exists and is staffed, and the boundaries between construction, commissioning, and operations are written down and understood on site. Where punch-list volume is growing faster than it is being cleared, the start-up date is already moving.

When should an LNG project be assessed for construction readiness?

Before mobilization of the main construction workforce, and again before the craft peak. Both points precede the moment when recovery gets expensive. On a project already in execution, the assessment still works: it measures where the field is against the plan and reports which assumptions are no longer holding.

Does modular delivery reduce field risk on LNG projects?

It moves the risk. Hours shift to the fabrication yard, but the interfaces multiply and the field crew must set, align, and complete connections on a sequence fixed months earlier. Late or out-of-sequence modules turn a schedule saving into congestion, and the pipe and electrical completion scope stays in the field.
